About the Artist
I have done art for a very long time and have made my living at it since 1984. I feel so fortunate to do something that compels and challenges me, affords me a great deal of freedom and allows personal growth and creativity. I have been able to explore a variety of media and processes over the years, show my work in various venues and obtain national exposure in this life-long learning process. I have explored clay extensively and am now working with 2-d mixed media wall hangings, banners and books.
My inner voice that wants to be heard manifests itself in the creatures and characters that show up in my work. These "beings" appear as THEY want to appear, regardless of any pragmatic stance that the realist in me would like to assume. I am amazed by and with living creatures and our response to the world. I am inspired by much and my ideas will come to me at any given moment during the day or night. I have relented to let my art be what IT wants to be, without concern for a broader acceptance or approval. The skin of reality can be thin and boring, but the bloated underbelly is ripe for exploitation. That is where I want my art to originate. There are layers and layers there to explore, filled with magic, electricity, absurdity and eccentricity. Contemporary artists that inspire me are filmmaker Tim Burton, illustrator Lane Smith and writer Ray Bradbury. As fun as this way of life can be, I have always felt a certain level of guilt for producing more "stuff" for our gluttonous world. I have attempted to allay some of this guilt by using fabrics, wood, frames and textural elements that are discards from other processes and already destined for a landfill. My process in a nutshell: The idea comes first, usually as a phrase in my head. I sketch out an image to go with the phrase in a sketchbook. I prepare my working surface, whether it be fabric, paper or wood. I draw the image and begin to add textural elements. I add color, using acrylic paint, pastels, craypas and colored pencil. The layering process goes on. When the piece is finished, I seal it with an acrylic sealer. Due to the water based nature of the products I use, my pieces are NOT meant to be displayed outside. Life outside the studio, involves my family: artist/husband Dave Stabley, our two teenage children, Erica and Jake, three dogs, a cat, and a big fish. I like to garden and in my spare time, I LOVE to hike in and get "lost" in the woods... I am always thankful when someone connects with my work. I hope it makes you feel SOMETHING…. It makes me feel good to create it.
